Victoria Buckingham followed up the Hallaton presentation as follows:
I
went to the presentation last night which I thought was impressive. I
have also done a bit of digging around and spoke to a guy I do some work
with. They have Gigaclear in their village just north of Abingdon.
They were one of the first and have been delighted with it. He has the
cheapest package which is 30mb/s which he says is ample to work from
home, video skype, video conference with shared screens etc with no
pixellation and fast upload/download speeds. He says there are some
people in his village paying for the 1000mb/s but he says that is
basically enough to run a credit card company through so he felt that
was a bit excessive. He is going to switch to the Vonage phone deal too
but just hasn’t got round to it. He said the dig was slightly painful
but was incredibly quick and they were unbelievably tidy. They even
cleared a few gulleys and water courses as they went through the
village. His only gripe with them now is that they are currently going
through the village and offering all those that haven’t signed up free
connection – ie. Waiving the £100 fee. He says they are on a big
mission to boost subscribers ahead of their flotation next year so we
may have some negotiating room. Having said that, we have registered.
If any member of the group would like to speak to Paul Fowler or a member
of his broadband group, they would be very happy to do so.
Anyone wanting to ask questions to Paul Fowler, please let me know.
